New site stuff coming soon
by Grimblast on Jan.23, 2010, under The Usual Blargh, note to self
So with the new year I’m thinking of adding some more things to my website to screw around with. I’m going to keep it a surprise until I get it working. It may make me do more posting on my page so here’s hoping for more stuff from Grim Daddy!
Survived Christmas
by Grimblast on Dec.29, 2009, under The Usual Blargh
Well, with my folks having company on Christmas, I was obligated to spend Christmas with them. It wasn’t too bad but I still couldn’t get the whole cheer of the season going. I’m going to try and post more often to this blog of mine but I always get distracted by events around me needing my attention. I might even put together a new theme of my own. We shall see…
Christmas
by Grimblast on Dec.18, 2009, under The Usual Blargh
Ah yes, the time of year to be cheery and all that jazz. I haven’t been having a good month thus far with some real life crap happening that has created a sort of depression for me. I’m hoping things improve so my holiday could be a bit brighter than what it looks like right now. To those that I might not catch up with as the holiday gets close, try and have a Merry Christmas!
I’ll try to strive for one myself but times have been kind of crappy…
Steam and Windows 7
by Grimblast on Nov.03, 2009, under Gaming, Geekdom, note to self
With my reinstallation of Windows 7 and Steam I started to encounter a silly problem. When I would try to run Steam it was trying to say that:
Running Steam in Windows compatibility mode is not recommended. Please remove any Windows compatibility settings for all users under file properties for Steam.exe and restart Steam. Press ‘Cancel’ to premanently ignore this warning and continue.
I checked my properties and found out that I wasn’t running in compatibility mode and yet Windows believed I was. I did some searching on the internet and one of the first few hits I got had the answer to this little dilemma. The site was slow to come up for me but it had what I was looking for. Apparently, there is a registry entry involved which causes this to happen. I’ll quote that site in the event they disappear or just don’t load up in a timely fashion.
To fix the issue:
- Hit start->run->regedit
- Go to key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
- Look for a entry with your path to steam.exe
- Delete that entry
- If you dont find it there try HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
Hope this helps out any that encounter this particular issue. As always, if you poke around in your registry and don’t know what you’re doing, I take no responsibility for your breaking of things.
Holloman Airshow
by Grimblast on Oct.24, 2009, under Geekdom, The Usual Blargh
I hear the airshow out on the base near me is pretty nice and some people are having fun. I’m stuck at work working all day Saturday so I get to miss out entirely. Aggrevating that it’s actually something I’m interested in and I have to work the one day they are having the event. For those that would like to see what you can online, here is a link to go over. Some pretty bad ass hardware on display too.

What a crazy concept but yet another odd and geeky read!
How to be a successful video game villain
by Grimblast on Sep.29, 2009, under Gaming, Geekdom
Here’s another wacky comic by gamespy. I think it covers the basics of what it takes to be a video game villain. Some of them are pretty accurate as to how you take out some bosses in games now days but still funny! I wonder if this could be used to determine how Rambo takes out the villains in all of his movies, hmm.
Improve Ping times
by Grimblast on Sep.26, 2009, under Gaming, Geekdom, note to self
So, during some random browsing around, I found a blog that had an interesting tid bit of info about how to improve your ping times. I remember reading and doing this before but since then, I’ve been using Windows 7. I’m curious if things have changed registry wise so I’m willing to potentially break something to see what kind of improvement I get in Windows 7. There are some drawbacks to what it does but it’s worth trying once.

If any of you readers out there were interested in trying it yourselves, please, be my guest but I take no responsibility in what you might break, hah! At the moment I’m at work but I will post my results after I’ve had the opportunity to do it.
Quake Live
by Grimblast on Sep.26, 2009, under Game of Note, Gaming
Here’s a little gem I screwed with a while back and may get back into with some local guys. It’s called Quake Live. You literally get to play Quake 3 through your web browser. No need to have the actual game. You just have to register a login on their site and get started. Currently, it supports most platforms out there so you can play it on a Windows PC, Mac, or Linux box. You can customize your settings through the web browser. Once you have done so, you can login from any computer and play with your settings any where, any time. It has a built-in stats system to keep track of your progess as well as they made their own in game achievement system if you are in to that sort of thing. Nice way to kill some time or hang out with some friends up for a few good first person shooter matches.
And let’s be honest, it’s Quake for Christ’s sake. Who wouldn’t have fun?!
