Improve Ping times

by Grimblast on Sep.26, 2009, under Gaming, Geekdom, note to self

So, during some random browsing around, I found a blog that had an interesting tid bit of info about how to improve your ping times.  I remember reading and doing this before but since then, I’ve been using Windows 7.  I’m curious if things have changed registry wise so I’m willing to potentially break something to see what kind of improvement I get in Windows 7.  There are some drawbacks to what it does but it’s worth trying once.

If any of you readers out there were interested in trying it yourselves, please, be my guest but I take no responsibility in what you might break, hah!  At the moment I’m at work but I will post my results after I’ve had the opportunity to do it.

Well, based upon the amount of in game(WOW) testing I did, this adjustment cut my in game ping times down by almost half. I’m cruising at 90ms to 120ms compared to my 200 something I used to ride with. I have noticed a very slight delay in web browsing but I’m going to run some more tests over time to see how bad the impact really is. So far, if you only use your rig for gaming, then this doesn’t look to be a bad adjustment. I’m sure the slight delay in browsing might largely impact downloads as the article states but I’m going to run tests with the settings adjusted and then remove them and try downloading the same file again but with the normal settings present in Windows 7.
